Born in 1493 in Einsiedeln, Switzerland, Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim — who would call himself Paracelsus — grew up in the shadow of his father, a physician and alchemist. From boyhood he was immersed in minerals, metals, and the art of healing. He would one day overturn everything medicine thought it knew.
