A Short Story
Glasgow & London · 19th Century

Born in 1827 into a Quaker family in Essex, Joseph Lister was a brilliant and meticulous student. He studied medicine at University College London, graduating in 1852. From the start, he was drawn to surgery — but also deeply troubled by how frequently patients died not from their operations, but from what happened afterward.
