A Short Story
Leiden, Netherlands · Early 18th Century

Born in 1668 near Leiden, Herman Boerhaave was largely self-taught. Denied entry into the Church for his unconventional views, he turned to medicine — devouring Greek, Latin, Arabic, and every scientific text he could find. By the time he joined Leiden University, he was already one of the most learned men in Europe.
